When was the last time you did Preventative Maintenance on your finishing line (plating, powder, paint)? You’re not sure? Or, we are too busy with production to do that right now! We can’t afford to shut down since we have so many orders to fill!
Well, I am here to tell you, no matter what the cost or price, you must do this on a regular basis! YOU MUST! If you do not, you will be in a world of suffering and pain, I promise you!
The best thing to do is try to schedule it close to a holiday, or a typically slow time for your Industry. That way you minimize your losses on production and overtime pay.
When your team starts the maintenance ritual, you must be thorough and methodical. You do not want to miss anything, because that one little thing you missed, will come back and take a chunk out of your hind-side, and you will need to save as much of it as you can, because your boss is going to start chewing on it REAL SOON!
Before you start, make sure you have all of your replacement materials and supplies to complete the task. If you do not, order it well in advance, and while you have those suppliers on the phone, go ahead and order the restocking supplies for the next time. This way, you have no Hot Shot costs or Uh – Ohs down the road!
Once completed, congratulate your crew on a job well done. When your boss asks you why you spent so much valuable time and money on such a mundane task, tell him or her that it is better to be proactive, than reactive! You both will sleep better at night and your production and quality will be better than ever!
